EVEREST MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT

Everest Medicare supplements come from one of the top U.S. and international insurance companies. Born over four decades ago out of a Prudential reinsurance organization, this company operates worldwide. Even though they have developed a large global footprint, Everest prides itself on providing personal service to customers and agents. The company’s Medicare supplement division is based within the United States in Clearwater, Florida.

If you want to research Medicare supplement providers because you are ready to qualify for Part A and B or have not been satisfied with your current insurer, you are prudent to consider the financial strength and longevity of various companies. You may be interested in these facts about Everest as a Medicare insurance company:

  • Year operations began: 1973
  • A.M Best financial rating: A+ Superior
  • S&P rating: A+ Strong

Determine if you qualify for an Everest Medicare Supplement

You must live in a state where the company has been authorized to sell you an Everest Medicare supplement. According to the website, approved states for the company’s supplements include Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

You can always ask your agent if Everest offers competitive rates where you live. The good news is that Everest has a good reputation for offering very low premiums for the most popular Medicare supplements.

Right now, Everest offers clients these Medicare supplement plans:

  • Plan A
  • Plan C
  • Plan D
  • Plan F
  • Plan G
  • Plan N

You have a guaranteed right to buy any Medicare supplement when you first qualify for Original Medicare and for six months afterwards. At other times, you may also enjoy another Guaranteed Issue Period because of lost coverage or other circumstances.

Rules for Guaranteed Issue Periods may vary in some states, but these are some general circumstances from the Everest Underwriting Guide that might trigger one outside of the time you first enroll in Part A and Part B:

  • You lost credible coverage from your employer or Medicaid.
  • You move away from the coverage area for a Medicare Select or Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Your health insurance company goes out of business or terminates your policy for another reason that is beyond your control.

During these additional Guaranteed Issue Periods, you may only be offered certain Medicare supplements. This can vary by state law, but the general rule from Everest is that you can buy these plans if they are available in your area: A, B, C, F, K, or L.

At other times, Everest may selectively issue policies to applicants who wish to add supplemental coverage or replace an existing plan. This means that you can still apply for a Medicare supplement; however, the company may decline some applicants because of their medical history.

These are some things you should know about Everest’s Selective Issue:

  • Everest is considered diabetes-friendly when compared to some other supplement companies.
  • If you don’t have a Guaranteed Issue Period, you will have to answer questions about your health history and any prescriptions that you take.
  • These health questions are explored below, and your answers could result in a decline for coverage.

One of the good things about Everest is that the application makes it very clear if you can be accepted for coverage. For example, a YES answer to any of the first eight medical questions on the application will result in a denial. Still, Everest has some fairly relaxed underwriting when compared to other health insurance companies, so you should never assume you will be declined just because you must manage some health issues.

If you answer YES to any of these health questions, Everest will decline you unless you enjoy a Guaranteed Issue Right:

  • Current medical conditions: Are you bedridden or in a nursing home? Have you ever had a doctor diagnose you with COPD or a cognitive disorder? Have you ever had an organ transplant or been advised to have one?
  • Within the past ten years years: Has a doctor diagnosed you with hepatitis C, cirrhosis, or a kidney disease?
  • Within the past five years: Have you needed to treat diabetes with more than 100 mg. of insulin or been diagnosed with malignant melanoma or internal cancer?
  • Within the past three years: Have you been treated for substance abuse or been treated for a mental disorder by a psychiatrist? Have you been hospitalized for ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease?
  • Within the past two years: Have you been hospitalized more than twice or been advised to have certain surgeries that have not yet been performed? Have you been advised to obtain speech, physical, or occupational therapy?

Again, these are only sample health questions, so the list is not completely inclusive. If you have any concerns about current or previous medical issues, you can always speak with an agent who will go over the application with you.

Otherwise, you will also be asked to list your prescription on the application from the last two years. Certain prescriptions may also raise a red flag and result in a decline. In addition, Everest uses a service called ScriptCheck® to develop a more comprehensive prescription history. In some cases, that history could raise questions and cause a decline as well.

Everest will consider the use of prescriptions as a treatment for their intended conditions. If you have taken some medications for an uncommon or off-label use, it’s best to supply that information on your application.

Besides your health history and prescriptions, the application will ask your height and weight. The weight ranges are fairly generous, but heights and weights that fall outside of the chart’s allowed amounts could be declined as well.

For instance, these are some of Everest’s height and weight requirements for Medicare supplements:

  • A man who is 5′ 8″ needs to weigh between 134 and 263 pounds.
  • A woman who is 5′ 4″ must weigh between 108 and 221 pounds.

Your Everest Medicare supplement will also come with a discount card that provides you with additional benefits. Even if you already have a drug plan, you may be able to use this card for additional prescription discounts. It may also provide discounts for diabetes and other medical supplies and non-prescription medications.

The company offers payments with convenient bank drafts. You can synchronize this with the date of your monthly social security check or another day of the month from one to twenty-eight. If your chosen date falls on a holiday or week-end, the company will take the payment on the following business day.
