MedMutual Protect Medigap Review

On December 1, 2022, Medical Mutual acquired Reserve National Insurance Company, formerly Kemper Health, and is now known as MedMutual Protect.  The purchase of Reserve National now gives Medical Mutual a national presence in almost all U.S. states.

Reserve National, headquartered in Oklahoma, was founded in 1956 and is now a subsidiary of Medical Mutual, offering Medicare Supplement plans for many years.  It was rebranded under the MedMutual Protect name in 2022.  In the state of Ohio, Medicare Supplement policies are still issued under the original Medical Mutual of Ohio name.

Who Owns MedMutual Protect?

Medical Mutual started in Ohio in 1934.  It’s an A.M. Best A-rated company that owns MedMutual Protect.  As a non-profit mutual organization, they prioritize caring for their policyholders over stockholders. They’re one of the oldest insurance companies in the U.S. and one of the largest insurance companies in Ohio.

MedMutual Protect Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Choices

MedMutual Protect offers Medicare Supplement plans in 31 states including:  Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisianna, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Virginia.

Medigap plans are differentiated by letters.  MedMutual Protect offers plans A, D, F, High Deductible F, G, High Deductible G, and N.  If you first became eligible for Medicare after December 31, 2020, you can’t buy an F or High Deductible F.

Should You Apply For A Guarantee Issue Policy?

If you’re going to purchase a new Medigap policy using a Guarantee Issue (GI) right like a Birthday Rule, or if your employer coverage is ending, your choice of plans is limited based on when you became eligible for Medicare.  If you were eligible to enroll in Medicare before January 1, 2020 you’ll have to purchase an F or High Deductible F plan under GI rules.  Anyone else needs to choose between a G or High Deductible G plan.  You can’t purchase plan Plan N using a Guarantee Issue special election period.  You can always apply for any plan they offer if you are willing to answer the health questions on the application.

You should use your Guarantee Issue right to enroll if you’ve been treated or diagnosed with any of the following conditions because you probably won’t be medically approved if:
