What Companies Offer The Best Deal In Nevada?

That depends on the letter associated with the Medigap plan you’re interested in.  Some companies are more price-competitive than others, depending on the plan and your age.  For example, if you’re 65 years old and interested in the highest level of benefits, Plan G would be the option. Physicians Mutual offers the lowest premiums for Plan G at age 65. Still, they’re not as competitive for Plan N.  Take a look at the list of Medigap plans and the companies offering the best deal.

Sample recommendations for a 65-year-old female in Las Vegas, Nevada, who doesn’t use tobacco or live with another adult.

Our suggestion for the lowest Medigap price for you may differ based on your zip code, age, gender, and tobacco use status.  If you live with another adult age 50 or older, you may be eligible for a household discount.  It’s possible to get an even better discount if the other adult has a policy with the same company.  Discounts range from 5% to 12% depending on the company.

When Can You Change a Nevada Medigap Plan?

You can change your plan at any time of the year.  Most people associate changing plans with the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which occurs from October 15 to December 7 each year.  This has nothing to do with changing Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans.  It only applies to Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D prescription plans.  Simply put, you can apply for another Medicare Supplement whenever you want.

Nevada Birthday Rule

You can apply for a new plan anytime,  but you’ll need to pass the health questions and underwriting with the new company.  If you tried to get a new plan and were denied, you have a safeguard in Nevada – The Annual Birthday Rule.

The Nevada Birthday rule allows you to apply for another Medicare Supplement for 60 days following the first day of your birth month and your acceptance will be guaranteed.  You can get any plan with any company as long as the benefits are the less than or the same as your current plan.  For example, you can go from a Plan G to another Plan G with the company of your choice.  You could also go from a Plan G to a Plan N because that’s a decrease in coverage.  You can’t go from a Plan N to a Plan G using the Birthday Rule because that would be an increase in benefits.  The only way improve your coverage when you change plans is to go through medical underwriting.

Determining when you can apply and when the new coverage would have to start can be complicated and it can vary by company.  Talk to a licensed agent or fill out the Customized Quote Form and we’ll help you figure out when you apply and have new coverage start.

What Plans Are Available In Nevada?

Medigap policies are standardized. Medigap must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and they are identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Insurance companies can only sell you “standardized” plans, which are designated by letters A–D, F, G, K, L, and N. All plans with the same letter offer basic benefits, regardless of your location or the insurance company from which you purchase the policy. Prices will differ between policies with the same letter sold by different companies.  They all must offer the same standardized benefit for the same lettered plan.

A few companies offer additional benefits, such as extra preventive testing or a fitness club membership or discount, but these are in addition to the basic benefits they’re required to cover.

A relatively new Plan G design called  “Innovative Plan G” offered by Physicians Mutual , is a hybrid of a regular plan G and the High Deductible G Plan.  It starts as a High Deductible G and becomes a regular plan after two to three years.

Understanding Medicare Supplement Insurance

What’s The Difference Between Medigap Plan In Nevada And Medicare Supplement?

Medigap refers to the same thing as a Medicare Supplement.  Consumers typically refer to “Medigap” in conversation, while insurance companies and other entities use the term “Medicare Supplement.”  If you purchase one of these insurance policies, the actual policy will always be referred to as a “Medicare Supplement.”  Medicare Advantage plans,  called Medicare Part C, are NOT Medigap insurance policies.

What Is A Medigap or Medicare Supplement Policy?

Medigap policies are private insurance plans available to individuals with Medicare Parts A and B. These policies charge a monthly premium, payable to the insurance company.  They are not the same as Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicare Parts A and B cover most medical expenses; however, some deductibles, copays, and coinsurance amounts are not covered.  If you have Medicare A and B, you can purchase a policy to pay the expenses that Medicare doesn’t cover.  Generally, Medicare pays first, and then the Medigap policy pays the balance.

Some Medicare Supplement policies also cover services that Original Medicare Fee-for-Service doesn’t cover.  These include emergency medical care when you travel outside the U.S. (foreign travel emergency care). Medicare doesn’t cover long-term care (like care in assisted living or a residence in a nursing home), vision or dental services, hearing aids, glasses, or private-duty nursing, so neither will a Medigap plan.

How Does a Medigap Policy Work?

If you have a Medigap policy and get care, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then, your Medigap policy will pay its share. Medicare doesn’t give an allowance or credit for any of the costs of buying a Medigap policy.

Do Medigap Policies Include Prescription Coverage?

No. You should consider purchasing a Medicare Part D plan to help cover the cost of prescriptions.  Medigap policies don’t cover prescription drugs unless the medication is covered under Medicare Part B.  Here are a few medications that are covered under Medicare Part B:

  • Chemotherapy drugs
  • Vaccines (e.g., flu, pneumonia)
  • Immunosuppressants
